"Discouraging Experience with Serenity Counseling Services"

I got a call back from Serenity Counseling Services. I had left them a message about wanting to make an appointment with a psychiatrist. When they called me back, I found out they only had psychologists at this location. The lady on the phone asked me why I wanted to book an appointment, and I told her my usual psychiatrist's office had closed and that I was trying to find a new one through my health plan. I needed to keep getting my ADD medication. The woman responded in a pretty rude and know-it-all kind of way, "Well, I don't think people with ADD need medication if you ask me." I was really surprised by her comment and told her it was rude. She seemed clueless about how she had just disrespected me. Instead of giving me her name when I asked for it, she just said the office name. I hope she was just a receptionist and not the actual psychologist. Choosing to get checked for ADD and go on medication was a huge step for me. Trying to find help from a psychiatrist or psychologist can be super stressful and scary for many people. It's not their job to give their personal opinions about patients. Their role is to help people find the right ways to succeed. I am shocked and bummed out by this experience. Her comment was unprofessional. Before this, I found visits to mental health professionals helpful and a good thing. After this conversation, I see psychologists differently.
